Last week, a colleague, mentor, and friend Professor John O. Browder lost his battle against cancer. John has left behind a significant legacy at Virginia Tech and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on his enduring impact.

During the eight years I worked with John, I was able to witness his dedication to student learning and leadership in advancing the international aspects of our academic programs. As a mentor, John was always willing to provide honest and constructive feedback that helped many faculty at Virginia Tech navigate the tenure and promotion process. I now find myself repeating the advice I received from John to others, advice that came from his decades of experience serving on promotion and tenure committees at the school, college, and university level.

Public health grand rounds provide a regular forum for discussion and communication on significant topics in public health research, policy and practice, and also serves as a platform for collaborations and networking. These seminars are collaboratively organized by the Department of Population Health Sciences, Center for Public Health Practice and Research, and Student Organizations: Public Health Association and American Mock World Health Organization.

We warmly invite you to be part of an exciting event in global public health – the 14th World Congress on Public Health to be hosted in Kolkata, India from 11-15 February 2015. The Congress will aim towards fostering the promotion of “Healthy People – Healthy Environment” and will bring together thousands of participants from a wide range of public health disciplines from many countries around the world.
 
The Congress Scientific Committee invites abstract submissions for the 14th World Congress on Public Health, being held 11- 15 February, 2015 in Kolkata, India. To be considered for presentation at the congress, abstracts must be submitted online for review by 15 June 2014. Authors will be notified of the outcome of the review process by 21 September 2014.
